Running Around for Art

Today and tomorrow I will be off running around. I'll be at the Purloin from 1-5 today, then tomorrow I'll be in Madison to drop off a piece for the WAAC exhibit at UW-hospital. The exhibit runs through February.

Also I'm still part of the show Midwest Seasons at the The Center for the Visual Arts, Wausau, WI. The show runs Jan 16 - March 1, 2009. I've been looking for articles or something that critique the show and haven't been able to find anything. The CVA said that there are several articles out there, but weren't specific.

Photo exhibit opening at Alverno on Friday

Robb Quinn, CoPA President, who I was talking to yesterday on Facebook, is part of a new show opening at Alverno on Friday. He works for or with the Underwood Foundation and is part of a group show on social justice in third world countries. These photographers are some of the best in the Milwaukee area, and I think, if you like photography, you should get out of the house and go see it.

I told Robb I wouldn't be able to make the opening, but I will try to view the exhibit next week. I plan to write a critique in this blog.

Did anyone see Bob Israel's exhibit of industrial sites at Light Impressions? I went on Saturday; Friday night was bitterly cold. I liked the emotion and the imagery, but I would have printed on matte paper. I thought gloss didn't fit the subject.

As a former employee of a robust manufacturer, I felt closer to the subject than probably a lot of viewers. The rust and decay made me sad, which I think was the photographer's intent. These examples of our disposable society are all around us and have been neglected for years. It's not my job, or who is going to pay for the clean up, aren't good enough excuses anymore.

His photos are like a parent coming to a child with examples of his iniquities. What are you going to do about this? They seem to say.

Facebook

I signed up for Facebook today for many reasons
  • Network and find other artists
  • Let people know about my Web site and blog
  • Job hunt

I have so many reasons to join this social networking group, I hope the message doesn't get lost as I think it does on this blog. Sometimes I write to prospective students; sometimes I write to other artists and sometimes I write to those who might hire me for a freelance job or buy a photo.

What do you think? Help me refine my posts.

Event photographs

Thank you Lippert Tile for hiring me to shoot your safety event last weekend. I enjoyed meeting with everyone and capturing your employees' smiles. I will have your CD for you by the end of the week.

Photo Friday

Every week, photographers from all over the world submit photos to describe a single word. Today's word was Iconic. My first thought was of Milwaukee. What's iconic here?
The Calatrava addition to the Milwaukee Art Museum. Just go on Flickr if you doubt me.

So I submitted my Full Moon Calatrava photo that I shot a year or two ago. I was walking out of the museum after going to the Sal Leiter exhibit and I turned around to see the moon in that perfect spot. It's a relaxing photo with soft blues and grays. The moon is a dot at the end of a sideways exclamation point.

No Photoshop used except to resize and adjust contrast.

Stop in and see all of the examples. Many submitted photos of our new president. And at the end of the week, visitors can vote on their fav. fotos. I'm 144.

Inauguration poster imposter

Just havin' a little fun. If I were to do a poster of myself in the style of the inauguration poster. This is what it would look like. It's in a style similar to what I use for a Pop Art Petrait.

Web site improvements

I've made some improvements to the Web site. One of the most noticeable changes is the addition of more animal photos. The swans for Valentine's Day, right, I thought would be a good addition.

Also I've added forms to make ordering prints and Pop Art Petraits easier. You fill out the form online, save as to your hard drive, and e-mail it back to me. I will send you an invoice that you pay through Pay Pal. I chose to do it this way because there are many variables to ordering a Pop Art Petrait, such as if you want me to photograph your pet. I determine that cost by distance. Pet portrait sittings start at $75.

Cold Enuf for U?

The weather forecasters said it's the coldest it's been in 10 years! It's beautiful and sunny, but resist going out to shoot. Your digital equipment is more subseptible to the cold than your old 35mm camera.

I'm staying warm inside applying to shows, searching for a new job and playing with the cat. Errands are postponed until tomorrow. Will be attending gallery night in the third ward. Two shows that I want to see: Bob Israel at Light Impressions, basement of the 207 Buffalo building, and on the fifth floor at the Portrait Society, the suit show. That building has several galleries in it such as Elaine Erickson on the first floor. Good place to visit if you want some art in one warm place.

Warm up to the Arts

On Valentine's Day, the Purloin Studio will be part of the first art crawl in Menomonee Falls. I designed the postcard that Susan will be using for this event.
You don't want to miss it. The artists in the Gallery are some of the best in the area. I will be there, as will my photos and my Pop Art Petraits. Save the date, find something for your Mate that s/he won't Hate.
Hey, it's better than roses are red.....

2009 Art Shows in Wisconsin

Here is an idea born out of the poor economy: should artists do art shows this year? or should they just skip it and wait for the economy to improve?

I've talked to a few artist friends who've all said how down their sales were in 2008. They were already feeling the effects of a bad economy. What do you think? Are you an artist who does shows? Are you willing to pay the fees, do the prep work and haul your art to a show for only a few customers?

One artist I talked to said no. Her shows were down last year, and she's going to pass. Another said yes, because this is how he makes his income. He has to do shows.

My path, I hope for this year, will be to enter the bigger shows that attract more people. I've applied to Wausau, Oconomowoc, Art Fair On the Square so far. I also plan to do smaller shows such as Lake Mills and Racine Starving Artist in August, because I've done these shows and they were good.

Send me your ideas on 2009 art shows in Wisconsin.

Magic Photo

What do you think? Isn't she a pretty cat? Since being laid off on Monday, I will now have lots of time to devote to kitty. She is a bright spot on a gray, snowy landscape. She came to us with the name Magic. She knows it and comes when we call her. We need a little Magic in our lives these days.
I will be sending out resumes looking for a position as a Marketing Assistant, or someone in that category. I did print and Web design; photography, still and video; tradeshow coordination and press release/ad management. I liked my job. It was challenging, plus I traveled to Chicago, Nashville and Vegas with tradeshows. I worked with Adobe CS3, Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
If you know of an opening, I would appreciate an e-mail.

Cat Joins Household

Her name is Magic, and she comes from Second Hand Purrs. She's 9lbs. 2oz. and she is a few months shy of 2. She is also kind of shy. It's been difficult to get photos of her. I look forward to taking many photos and doing a Pop Art Petrait of her to post on here.

Because she is older, we introduced her gradually to the whole house. She's been here since Saturday night and we finally let her have the run of the whole house today. Too much too soon though. She is sneezing and has goopy eyes, a sign of stress.

We will be watching to see if it gets worse or better.

CVA Entry

My entry to the CVA, Wausau show is due next week Jan. 6 or 7. I need Plexiglas to ship my piece. Tradewinds, where I usually buy glass and Plexiglass, seems to be closed this week. Does anyone know where I can buy Plexiglas? Get it cut for the frame? I would like to mail my piece by Saturday. With the holidays, many stores, such as Artist & Display, are closed today. Michaels didn't have any and suggested Home Depot. Their Plexiglas isn't thin enough for frames.

On the first day of the new year, I am perplexed.

Anyone going down to Bradford Beach today to see the polar bears? I went last year and had planned to go this year. But I won't be able to make it. My boss has been going in for over 10 years. He sets up a tent, cooks food and invites friends, co-workers to join him. It's exillerating.
